Felbier Maurice

Maurice Felbier was a Belgian artist born in Antwerp in 1903 and died in Borgerhout in 1991. He was a painter and woodcarver. He was educated at the Academy (1919-1922) and at the Higher Institute in Antwerp under the supervision of Is. Opsomer and E. Pellens (1923-1930). He evolved from the heavy touch of his teacher Opsomer to impressionistic light sensitivity. His paintings include gossamer still lifes, female nudes and religious works. He idealized his subjects. Cups and slender bodies are reminiscent of the Florentine painters of the Quattrocento. He liked large formats and his compositions were mostly literary-charged Symbolist works. From the press: “Through rose-colored glasses of purity and optimism, he seeks contact with people and nature. His work knows no tensions; it wants to become a meditative, dreamy expression of a thought, of a state of mind, or of religious subjects. He idealizes and paints gracefully. His message is: beauty, love and light.” From 1939 he was a member of the Circle 't Getij. He was a teacher at the Academy in Antwerp from 1950 to 1968. His work can be found in the Museum in Antwerp, among other places. He is mentioned in CRICK, BAS II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
