Massart Jean-Georges

Jean-Georges Massart (Tienen 1953 - 2022 Tienen) · Sculptor, painter, designer of assemblages and installations, conceptual artist. Education at the Municipal Academy in Tienen (1970–1977) under Jef Vaes and at Ter Kameren in Brussels (1978–1983) under Roger Dudant. Minimalist. His works can often be situated on the border between sculpture and installation and sometimes consist of a few willow twigs or an upright branch. From the press: 'J.G.M. draws upon the things nature provides him: flat stones, bundles of branches, twigs, with which he creates tensions and spatially develops structures' and 'In the work of J.G.M., minimalism, land art, and fluid sculpture merge. For years, alongside his installations, he has also designed small sculptures that are mainly constructed using twigs and branches.' He likes willow twigs because they bend readily but do not break; other types of wood can be hollowed out, and still others can be sculpted traditionally.' (after C.L., 2002) Selected for 'Line/Color/Volume 1977.' Participated in, among others, Jeune sculpture 85/2 in Paris in 1985, exhibited at the Maison de la Culture in Namur in 1991 ('La pierre, dialogues et métamorphoses II'), at the De Ziener gallery in Asse in 1992, 1994, 1995, and 2000, at the Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art in Liège in 1998 ('L'arbre qui cache la forêt'), at the Atelier 340 Museum in Brussels in 1999, and at the Jan Colle gallery in Ghent in 2003. Works included in the collections of the French-speaking Community, the Flemish-speaking Community, the Province of Flemish Brabant, Dexia, Fortis, the Atelier 240 Museum in Brussels, and the Stedelijk Museum Het Toreke in Tienen. Mentioned in BAS II and Twee eeuwen signaturen van Belgische kunstenaars. (Piron)
