Carion Marius

Marius Carion was a Belgian artist, born in Blaugies in 1898 and died in Wasmes in 1949. He was a painter and engraver. He was educated at the School of Arts and Crafts in Saint-Ghislain under the supervision of Marius Renard and at the Academy in Mons, under the supervision of Alfred Duriau (1915-1920). In 1919 he held his first individual exhibition. In 1928 he stayed in England and became a professional photographer. He spent the greater part of his life at Wasmes. He realized portraits, figures (miners, for example), caricatures, illustrations and especially landscapes from the Borinage. He found his inspiration mainly in the mining area and the people who worked there. His works often testified to his social attitude. Over the years, his style became more restrained and he started to synthesize his design, in order to come close to Expressionism. His works breathe sincerity, strength and realism. He illustrated several works such as 'Treize hommes dans la mine' by P. Hubremont (1938). Work by Marius Carion can be found in the Museums in Mons, Brussels, Spa, Liège, Tournai, Namur, Charleroi and La Louvière. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
