Balla Margit

Margit Balla is a Hungarian artist who was born in Budapest in 1947. She is an illustrator, painter, scenographer and graphic artist. She designed posters in the 1970s and 1980s. Today she is known for her illustrations and other graphic works (drawings, etchings, etc.), and her theater designs. Between 1969 and 1974 she studied graphics at the Academy of Applied Arts with István Balogh, György Konecsni and József Finta. After completing her studies, she mainly worked on poster designs and illustrations. In the 1990s she devoted herself to stage and costume design and also created figures for the Pupper Theater. On her posters she combined the impressions of old prints with modern tendencies, such as Pop Art. Her designs are easily recognized by her special surrealistic drawing style. She made many movie posters with such imaginative compositions. For example, she designed the Hungarian poster for the film Hair, which also shows a surrealistic image. Her art consists of meticulous pencil, pen and ink drawings, touched by surrealism. Her particularly rhythmic compositions depict plant motifs, fantastic creatures, puppet-like figures, people, animals and architectural elements. They possess a very unique eclecticism and symbolism. In her art, everyday reality is mixed with a fictional world. (BT, Internet)
