Maet Marc

Marc Maet was a Belgian painter, born in Schoten in 1955 and deceased in Mariakerke (Ghent) in 2000. He studied painting (1974–1978) and etching (1974–1980) at the Academy in Ghent.

He created works in lacquer or polyester on canvas, in which words, signs and figures evoke a mysterious atmosphere within broad fields of white. From 1982 onwards, he evolved from a vigorous, expressive approach to a more refined visual vocabulary with archetypal abstract themes such as water, fire, light, earth and space. His work was always based on visual observation, redrawn in a highly distilled and often unrecognisable form into an autonomous pictorial entity.

From the press: “M.M. creates a pictorial space scattered with fragments, remnants of old religious folk prints, scientific illustrations, and alchemical symbolism” (1994), and “The pictorial element always plays a key role in his work, often intersected by graphic-like signs or motifs.”

He was awarded the European Prize for Painting in Ostend in 1982. His work was acquired by the Belgian State in 1986/1987. He is listed in BAS II and Twee eeuwen signaturen van Belgische kunstenaars. (Piron)
