Maes Jan

Jan Maes was a Belgian artist, born in Dendermonde in 1876 and died in Zeveneken in 1974. He was a painter and watercolorist. As a student of J. Rosseels and Is. Meyers at the Academy in Dendermonde, he went on to perfect himself as a decorative painter in Brussels. He was an emotional impressionist, who often treated his subjects in a synthesizing way. He worked in the style of the Dendermonde school, with a preference for picturesque Dendermonde city corners. He also painted landscapes and Scheldt views. He worked with a generous paint paste. From the press: “The art of J.M. bears as its innermost characteristic the unusual richness of color and the synthetic grandeur in the interpretation of the natural being.” (1930) From 1905 he was a teacher and from 1939 to 1941 director at the Academy in Dendermonde. We can find his work in the Museum in Dendermonde, among other places. Jan Maes is mentioned in CRICK, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
