Macken War
War (Edward) Macken was a Belgian artist, born in Diest in 1883 and died in Diest in 1970. He was a painter, sculptor and designer of wood carving. Professionally, he was a furniture maker and a furniture company specialized in style furniture. As an artist, he realized picturesque corners, fairground scenes, portraits, typical (Dietse) figures and Kempian landscapes. His works breathe in peace, peace and quiet beauty. In 2019, Limes Tamera, the local association of the Demerstreek, held a retrospective of his work. His extensive oeuvre (around 3000 drawings and paintings) is an integral part of the modern heritage of Diest. War Macken is mentioned in two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron, BT)
