Abry Léon
Léon Abry was a Belgian artist who was born in Antwerp in 1857 and who died in 1905, also in Antwerp. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolorist and engraver. Was led to a military career by his father, a general, but after his death in 1871 he opted for art. Education at the Academy in Antwerp under Polydore Beaufaux (1875-1878). Successively devoted himself to different genres: academic genre painting, humorous illustrations of soldier life, impressionistically inspired landscapes and finally military scenes again, this time less anecdotal but monumental and naturalistic in concept. He depicts this animal in its various movements and postures and manages to capture it with great panache in a very realistic design. (B. Velghe) Participated in the realization of the diorama of the Belgian army for the World Exhibition in Antwerp in 1894. Was a member of the Société des Aquarellistes (1886) and of the Cercle des XIII in Antwerp. Co-founder of the L'Art Indépendant Group in 1887.
