Le Roy Hippolyte

Hippolyte Le Roy was a Belgian artist who was born in 1857 in Liège and who died in 1943 in Ghent. He was a sculptor, painter, medal designer, draftsman and watercolourist. Hippolyte Le Roy (or Leroy) studied during his military service at the Academy of Ghent, where he was a student of Jean-Pierre Van Biesbroeck. Thanks to good projects for the Godecharle competition, he was awarded a scholarship to study for two years (1881-1883) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he also collaborated with Alexandre Falguière who was working at the Triumphal Arch at the time. He then studied in Rome with a scholarship from the Darchis Foundation. Le Roy was best known for his sculptures and his commemorative medals, but he also painted. He also taught painting at the Higher Institute of Antwerp for several years. His sculpture deals with classical or oriental subjects, but he also makes official monuments, war monuments, funerary monuments and medals. He won a silver medal at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris. He has participated in many exhibitions. (Benezit, Piron)
