Laffineur Marc
Marc Laffineur was a Belgian artist, born in Bomal-sur-Ourthe in 1940 and died in Liège in 2014. He was a graphic artist, painter, sculptor and designer of medals. He was educated at Sint-Lucas and at the Academy in Liège (1955-1963). He was a student of J. Donnay and H. Brasseur. His early paintings depicted poetic, lyrically treated landscapes and marines. He then preferred sculpture and wood engraving. In 1966 he founded the Atelier international de gravure sur bois in Saint-Hubert. In his woodcuts he allows the shape, fiber, knots and other imperfections of the wood to play a role in the processing of the block. From the press: “He transcends matter, he recreates it into a work of art that is all the more moving as it takes life's tragedy as a source of inspiration.” He was also a designer of large, surreal color prints. From the press about his sculpture: “With a powerful hand he folds, twists and exploits long strips of metal into busts, seated figures, pierced heads, sometimes filled with a wooden face.” Marc Laffineur was co-founder of the Cap d'Encre group. He was a graphics teacher at the Academy in Liège from 1974 to 1986. We find his work in the Print Rooms in Brussels and Liège. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
