Labyt Hubert
Hubert Labyt is a Belgian artist, born in Ostend in 1951. He is a painter, draughtsman, watercolorist, architect, and urban planner. He studied at the Higher Institute for Architecture and Urban Planning in Ghent (1969-1974) and was also a non-degree student under the architect Marcel Molleman in Ostend, who later became his internship supervisor. He has a particular preference for watercolors depicting, among other subjects, city views and beach scenes of Ostend. In Hubert Labyt’s architecture, mathematical composition prevails, with the golden ratio playing an essential role. The exterior of the building is sober and respects the genius loci insofar as this offers a valid point of departure; the interior is rich in perspectives, with references to Baroque and Art Nouveau in its spatial organization. He is listed in the Lexicon of West Flemish Visual Artists. (Piron,BT)
