Klasen Peter

Peter Klasen is a German contemporary sculptor, painter and photographer. He was born in Lübeck in 1935 and lives in France. He studied at the Berlin Art Academy. Klasen is best known for his collage-style Pop Art paintings and prints. Using tools such as an airbrush, the artist contrasts images of industrial objects such as manometers and hydraulic circuits with sensual images of women. These contradictions are how the artist confronts themes of confinement, political control and fear. He built the La Nouvelle Figuration movement together with the artists ERRO and Valerio Adami. The purpose of the La Nouvelle Figuration or La Figuration Narrative was to critique consumer culture, rather than celebrate it like Andy Warhol. Works by this German artist are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris. (BT)
