Karsen Eduard
Johann, Eduard Karsen was a Dutch painter, born in Amsterdam/Netherlands in 1860 and died in Amsterdam in 1941. He was the son of the painter Kasper Karsen, from whom he received training at an early age. He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. There he met other young artists, including Antoon Derkinderen, Willem Tholen, Jan Toorop. He also befriended G. Breitner and I. Israëls. In 1880 he founded the artists' association Sint Lucas together with W. Witsen, J. Toorop and A. Derkinderen. His works are mysterious and poetic in character. His style is reminiscent of the Hague School. Subjects are town and village views and farms in the twilight of the morning or evening. He was part of the movement of the Eighties. Work by Eduard Karsen can be found in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam/the Netherlands and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo/the Netherlands, among others. (B. Topper)
