de Bauw Karel
Karel de Bauw was a Belgian painter and draftsman. He was born and died in Asse (1909-2002). He was self-taught, but took lessons in M. Melsen's studio from 1925 to 1930. He remains attached to 17th-century Dutch painting and develops a style influenced by his great historical masters: F. Hals and Rembrandt. He found his inspiration in rural life, the farm horses and the work in the fields, the jovial folk people, farmers' heads, the Pajottenland and also painted (children's) portraits, snow landscapes, still lifes and interiors. He exhibited for the first time in 1939. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron; Dictionnaire des peintres belges)
