De Sutter Jules

Jules De Sutter was a Belgian artist who was born in Ghent in 1895 and who died in 1970 in Sint-Martens-Latem. He was a painter, draftsman and watercolorist. Training at the Academy in Ghent under the direction of J. Delvin and C. Tremerie. Painted landscapes, figures and genre pieces. His first canvases look a lot like prints. Later he evolved towards a thorough expressionist design. Belongs to the generation of animists. After 1925 he participated in the Brussels modernist circles. He belonged, together with H. Malfait, to the youngsters of the second group of painters from Sint-Martens-Latem. Greatly admired Gust De Smet. Lived from 1920 to 1929 in Het Rozenhuis, the former home of G. Van De Woestyne, and then settled in Sint-Martens-Latem. From the press: “J.D.S. painted with broad brush strokes, in a kind of drunkenness of senses, figures with a healthy and sturdy appearance. One cannot remain indifferent to those raw syntheses of rural life, always with large areas of color, usually in high and sometimes even in garish colors.” Was a teacher at the Academy in Ghent (1944-1958). Work in the Museum in Ostend. Mentioned in the Lexicon of West Flemish visual artists V, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. Source: Piron
