Brouwers Jules

Jules Brouwers, or Johannes Hubertus Julius Maria Brouwers, was a naturalized Belgian painter of Dutch descent. He was born in Gulpen in 1869 and died in Vilvoorde in 1955. Brouwers was a student of Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriel and later studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Luc in Liège. At the beginning of the 20th century he was active in Brussels and the surrounding area. He was a member of the Bende van De Suisse, a group of painters, architects, poets, writers and other culture lovers who spent many evenings in the 1920s in the Café Suisse on the Vrijthof in Maastricht. He was also a member of the Limburg Art Circle. In 1914 he fled Belgium and moved to Plasmolen. Brouwers lived in Vilvoorde from his naturalization to Belgian on 4 August 1921. He had a preference for landscapes (as a genre), village scenes, marines (as a genre), still lifes and flower still lifes. (Wikipedia, RKD)
