Verhaeghe Jozef

Jozef Verhaeghe was a Belgian painter, draftsman, watercolorist and restorer, born and died in Liège (1900-1987). He was educated at the Academy in Liège under the direction of A. Donnay, F. Maréchal and A. De Witte. He was a teacher at the Academy in Liège from 1955 to 1965. He has created landscapes, Meuse views, industrial sites, city and village views and panoramas, among other things. he exhibited, among other things, at the Exposition Triennale de Gand in 1925, at the Vierjaarlijks Salon in Ghent in 1954, at the Contacts gallery in Liège in 1959. From the press: ’J.V. is the painter par excellence of Liège: he discovered the city, pictorially speaking, and knows how to make us feel its soul. His work is permeated with a melancholic poetry. He prefers to work in gray tonalities and knows how to present his subjects very delicately.' He realized decorative panels for various institutions in Liège. He was attached to the city of Liège as an official restorer. His work can be found in the collection of the Musée de l'Art Wallon in the Musée de la Vie Wallonne, the Lyceum Léonie de Waha. He is mentioned in Annuaire des beaux-arts de Wallonie (Robert Scheffer, 1960), in BAS II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
