Linnig Jozef
Jan Théodore Jozef (Jozef) Linnig was a Belgian artist born and died in Antwerp (1815-1891). He was a painter, engraver, draftsman and watercolourist. He was educated at the Academy in Antwerp under the direction of E. Corr (engraving) and J.B. De Jonghe (painting). He mainly realized Antwerp cityscapes and refined landscapes from the area. He left behind an extensive oeuvre that shows the cityscape of his time. Most of the corners he drew, etched or watercolored no longer exist and his works represent a rich wealth of iconographic documentation. Artistic collaborator of Mertens and Torfs on the Album historique de la ville d'Anvers (1846-1854). Together with Théo Hippert he published Le peintre-engraver hollandais et belge au 19me siècle (1874). He printed his etchings with his own hands and also worked for other engravers. For a long time he was a dealer in prints. We can find his work in the Print Room in Antwerp. He is mentioned in BAS II and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (piron)
