Cantré Jozef

Jozef Cantré was a Belgian artist who was born in Ghent in 1890 and who also died in Ghent in 1957. He was a sculptor, woodcarver and illustrator. brother of Jan-Frans Cantré. Drawing and modeling training at the Academy in Ghent. Worked in different workshops to master stone and wood carving. Stayed in the Netherlands from 1914 to 1930, became friends with F. Van Den Berghe and G. De Smet and also took over their expressionist design. Then settled back in Ghent. As a sculptor designer of figures, nudes, some portraits. As a woodcarver, he 'saw' the image directly in the block and worked it out in white areas, which he sharply contrasted with the black. He escaped the influence of his fellow townsman, George Minne, and strove for the pithy portrayal of a convinced emotion. His work is characterized by monumentality, by its tenseness and by the visionary power and lucidity with which the essence of artistic emotion is conveyed. Designed, among other things, the monument for Anseele in Ghent. Was a teacher at La Cambre in Brussels from 1941 to 1946. Mentioned in the Biography Nationale of the Royal Academy of Belgium, volume XXXV. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
