Van Severdonck Joseph

Joseph Van Severdonck was a Belgian painter born in Brussels in 1819 and died in Schaerbeek in 1905. He was educated at the Academy in Brussels from 1833 to 1843. He realized religious, historical and military compositions, especially horsemen. He was a teacher and chosen painter of the Queen Marie-Henriette, for whom he painted several versions of her favorite horse. He took part in the Salon of Antwerp in 1861 with The rest of the Holy Family, in the Salons in Ghent in 1874 with The ford, The attack of the cavalry and The good number, and in 1883 with The flight of the cavalry and Vlaanderenstraat. He was a teacher at the Academy in Brussels from 1865 to 1900. His work can be found in the Army Museum in Brussels, in the Church of Our Lady in Namur and in the Museum in Tournai. He is mentioned in BAS I and two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
