Callaerts Jos (Jozef)

Jos (Jozef) Callaerts was a Belgian painter born in Lier in 1896 and died in 1965 in Knokke-Zoute. He studied at the Academies in Lier (1903-1912) and Antwerp, under direction of Is. Opsomer (1912-1914). From 1922 he settled in Armentières/France for some time. From 1937 he devoted himself exclusively to painting. Realized portraits, compositions, Scheldt and coastal views (Zeebrugge), city views (Lier, Antwerp), rural scenes, flower arrangements, still lifes and interiors. His works refelct an intimate atmosphere. From the press: “J.C. painted many self-portraits, but was also a much sought-after portraitist for state paintings of mayors and ministers. He himself liked to stay by the water and made many marines and harbor views." Listed in Two centuries of signatures by Belgian artists. (PIRON)
