Empain Jos

Jos (eph) Jules Empain was a Belgian artist who was born in Ath in 1867 and who died in 1940. He was a painter. Education at the Drawing Academy in Ath, then at the Academy in Brussels under the direction of Portaels (1886) and at the Academy in Antwerp (in 1888). Participated in the preparatory competition for the Prix de Rome in 1889. Painted portraits, genre scenes, landscapes and cityscapes (including Antwerp, Montmartre). Colorful palette, influenced by Impressionism. Moved to Paris in 1892 to further develop his career. Worked there in 1899 together with Max Koski on the decoration of the theater Maguera. Participated in the Salon des Artistes Français in 1934. Mentioned in Les peintres d’Ath: bilan historique et artistique (1999). Source: Piron
