Michaux John

John Michaux was a Belgian artist who was born in Antwerp in 1876 and who died in Brussels in 1956. He was a Belgian painter. He was a student at the Antwerp Art Academy and then at the Higher National Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp (with Frans Hens). He presented himself as a painter of landscapes, seascapes and still lifes. His landscapes are often situated on the banks of the Scheldt or in the Antwerp Kempen and his navies on the Flemish coast. Before the First World War he lived in Nieuwpoort. Much of Nieuwpoort's oeuvre was destroyed there during the First World War. During the war he stayed in Great Britain, London, Bexhill and Newlyn. During the interwar years he lived in Berchem/Antwerp, Mevrouw Courtmansstraat 28. He was a teacher at the Higher Colonial Institute in Antwerp. Michaux became a member of the Antwerp artists' association "Als ik Kan" when it had already passed its peak and of the "Société belge des Peintres de la Mer", where the leading Belgian marine painters found each other.
