Buckland Wright John

John Buckland Wright was a British/New Zealand artist who was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1897 and who died in London in 1954. From 1921 he lived in Belgium, where he was elected a member of the Gravure Originale Belge in 1925. He was a graphic artist and wood engraver. Buckland Wright illustrated two of the three editions of the Dutch publisher and bibliophile Willem Henrik Emile (Emile) baron van der Borch van Verwolde. John Buckland Wright played an important role as an illustrator at the British Golden Cockerel Press. Among other things, he made illustrations for Omar Khayyam's Rubáiyát (1938). A Dutch version of this book was published by the illegal publisher De Bezige Bij in 1943. Buckland Wright was also active for Dutch ex-libris collectors for whom he made a number of designs.
