Coomans Johan

Joannes Baptista Ludovicus Antonius Coomans or Johan Coomans was a Belgian artist who was born in Antwerp in 1896 and who died in Berlaar in 1976. He was a sculptor of religious statues and war memorials as well as an etcher. He worked as a teacher in art education at the Academy of Heist-op-den-Berg. In the municipality of Berlaar, where the artist settled after the First World War, a J. B. Coomansstraat was named after him. In 1925 he made a 220 cm high sculpture of Our Lady in Carrara marble for the Kanunikanessen sisters of the H. Graf in Turnhout. In 1916 he helped his father Jaak with the creation of the first Stations of the Cross in Brasschaat (Rumoord). (etsen.blogspot / Piron)
