Donnay Jean

Jean Donnay was a Belgian artist who was born in Cheratte in 1897 and who died in Herstal in 1992. He was a painter, draftsman, decorator and, above all, engraver. Education at the Academy in Liège under A. Donnay, E. Carpentier, F. Maréchal, A. De Witte, F. Berchmans. Realized Ardennes and industrial landscapes, scenes from daily life in the city and in the countryside, but also painted and engraved figures, portraits. Co-founder of Le Trait in Paris in 1935, a circle that grouped independent etcher-engravers. He was a teacher of engraving from 1931 to 1960 and director of the Academy in Liège from 1960 to 1961. Retrospective in the Museum in Liège in 1957, in the Musée de l'Art Wallon in Liège in 1965, in Stavelot in 1972, in Nancy in 1972. Work in the Print Rooms in Brussels and Liège, in the Museums in Ghent, Antwerp, names. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
