Brusselmans Jean

Jean Brusselmans was a Belgian artist, born in Brussels in 1884 and died in Dilbeek in 1953. He was a painter, draftsman and graphic artist. He received his education at the Société Belge de lithographie (1898) and at the Academy in Brussels, under the direction of J. Delville and Is. Verheyden (1987-1906). In 1907 he rented a studio together with R. Wouters. From 1906 to 1914 he painted the landscapes in the Linkebeek region. In 1911 he married Maria Frisch, his only female model. In 1914 he took part in the last salon of La Libre Esthétique, together with, among others, R. Wouters and G. Van De Woestyne. From 1914 to 1918 he lived in Auderghem and became friends with A. Oleffe. in 1924 he settled permanently in Dilbeek, but also often stayed on the Belgian coast. He is co-founder of L'Art Vivant. In the beginning he painted realistic landscapes with an impressionistic touch. After contact with Oleffe and under the influence of the Brabant fauvists, the color became more important. He subsequently underwent the influence of Van Gogh and the Latem expressionists, but processed all influences in a personal way. Through his objective view of nature, he distanced himself from both realism and the subjective distortion of Latem expressionism. With his strictly constructed, at first fierce, later soberly colored compositions, he occupies a special place among the Flemish expressionists. Work by Jean Brusselmans can be found in the museums in Antwerp, Brussels and Ixelles. It is also mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
