Huygens Léon

Léon Huygens (Oudergem, 1876–Paris, 1918) · Painter, etcher. Trained at the Academy in Brussels. Gained fame as a landscape painter and often worked in the vicinity of the Sonian Forest. However, he also painted village and cityscapes, and seascapes. He had a studio in Nieuwpoort when the First World War broke out. He fled to France and volunteered for military service. He was soon assigned to the Artistic Department of the army. He participated in, among others, the Salon Triennal des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1903, the 'Exhibition of Watercolors, Pastels and Etchings' in Antwerp in 1906, the Salon de Printemps in Brussels in 1909, and the Salon d'Art Moderne in Charleroi in 1911. His work is held in the Museum in Brussels, among others. Mentioned in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
