Belgische kunstenaar Hubert De Vries

De Vries Hubert

Hubert De Vries was a Belgian artist born in Antwerp in 1899 and died there in 1979. He was a painter. Spent much of his childhood at Calais. From 1918 training at the Academy in Antwerp led by Is. Opsomer and J. Creytens. When he met Permeke, G. De Smet and A. Servaes he quickly evolved into expressionist design and he also admired J. Smits. Realized marines, figures, portraits, clowns and religious subjects. The lumpy paint paste and the mystical light which reflects in some works remind us of Jakob Smits. Mentioned in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (PIRON)
