Horenbant Jozef
Jozef (Joseph) Horenbant was a Belgian artist born in Ghent in 1863 and died in Ledeberg in 1936. He was a painter. Education at the Academy in Ghent under the direction of Th. Canneel. Then stayed in Paris for 2 years and received advice and support from J. Bastien-Lepage. Realized landscapes, genre scenes, figures, nudes, portraits and (church) interiors. The rather vaguely painted shapes and figures were strongly determined by the play of the incident light. His works breathe silence, sensitivity, emotion and idealism. From the press: 'The art of J.H. is quietly sad or quietly happy, always simple where mild and noble. It sings of the little man who fights to survive, sings of domestic salvation.' Became a teacher at the Academy in Sint-Niklaas in 1887 and later also at the Drawing School in Ledeberg. He was director of the Academy in Sint-Niklaas from 1899 to 1932. He was chairman of the Art Circle in Ghent from 1911 to 1918. Work in the Museums in Antwerp and Ghent. Mentioned in Crick, BAS and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
