Heyens Hugo

Hugo Heyens was a Belgian artist, born in Mortsel in 1942 and passed away in Antwerp in 1987. He was a painter, draughtsman, illustrator, graphic artist, and ceramist. He studied graphic art and ceramics at the Academy in Antwerp and monumental painting at Sint-Lukas in Brussels.

He created rather pessimistic religious subjects, nudes, and expressive portraits, (Bruges) cityscapes, West Flemish landscapes, and sober, poetic impressions of Spain, southern France, and China. He started as a neo-expressionist, but friendships with R. De Saegher, J. Hendrickx, and A. De Wilderode resonated in his work. His linework became more poetic, and his creations began to breathe more symbolism and spirituality.

He taught at Sint-Lukas in Schaerbeek (1965-1987) and at the Academy in Mortsel (1980-1987). Works by Hugo Heyens can be found in the Museum of Modern Religious Art in Ostend.

He is listed in the Lexicon of West Flemish Visual Artists V, BAS II, and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists.
