Van Straten Henri

Henry Van Straten was a Belgian artist who was born in Antwerp in 1892 and who died there in 1944. He was an engraver, xylographer, lithographer and draftsman. Education at the National Higher Institute in Antwerp under Edward Pellens. Further education during the First World War at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam under J. J. Aarts. gained fame mainly as a woodcarver. He found inspiration in the nightlife in Antwerp, in the skippers' quarters: harbor bars, sailors, barmaids, dancers, but also religious subjects and general human problems, he did not shy away from. He also worked as an illustrator of numerous books. From the press: 'Besides his craftsmanship as a xylographer, he was an extraordinary draftsman: a man with a refined, somewhat perverse temperament, gifted with a fantasy that amazed us.' (Joris Minne) One of the members of De Vijf, together with Frans Masereel, Joris Minne, Jozef and Jan-Frans Cantré. A haze of ignorance hangs over his death. He was last seen alive on September 4, 1944, Liberation Day of the city of Antwerp, near the city gate in the direction of Kalmthout, where he lived. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
