Guansé Antonio

Antonio Guansé Brea (Tortosa 1926–2008 Paris) was a Spanish-Catalan painter, born in Tortosa, Catalonia. His career was linked to the post-war art scene of Paris. After studying art in Barcelona and participating in avant-garde circles such as the "Ciclos Experimentales de Arte Nuevo", he moved to Paris, where he eventually settled permanently. Influenced by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Guansé developed a distinctive style that evolved from expressive landscapes and scenes of fishermen and farmers into a vibrant form of "New Figuration", in which abstraction and figuration were in balance. Human figures, city life, and emotional symbolism became central themes in his work, characterized by bold colors, simplified forms, and a poetic sensibility rooted in his early love of literature. He died in Paris in 2008, leaving behind works that are held in important public collections in France and Spain. (JSW)
