Rouault Georges

Georges Rouault was a French artist who was born in Paris in 1871 and died there in 1958. He was a French Expressionist and Fauvist painter. In 1907 Rouault made a series of paintings with courts, clowns and prostitutes as subjects. These works were received as moral and social criticism. He was attracted to spiritualism and the dramatic existentialism of the philosopher Jacques Maritain, who remained a close friend for the rest of his life. After this he devoted himself to Christian subjects and themes. Human nature is a focus of interest in all his work.
