Sempels Geo (Georges)

Geo (Georges) Sempels was a Belgian artist who was born in Lubbeek in 1926 and who died in Vilvoorde in 1990. He was a painter and printmaker. Education in Tienen, plastic arts regency at the RNS in Brussels, portrait painting at the Academy in Aalst. Debuted around 1949 with landscapes that still refer to Flemish expressionism. His first abstract material works were monochrome in design, usually in a gray dominant with red, blue and brown tones. Came through gradual simplification and synthesis into pure, lyrically abstract compositions. Award at the Prize of Young Belgian Painters in 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1963. From the press: "G.S. managed to take abstract art to unprecedented heights. After years of searching and experimenting, he came up with his own style, where surfaces, lines and colors were merged into a harmonious whole. The golden ratio as the bearer of his compositions guided his intuition, controlled his receptivity, guided his spontaneity and ordered his emotions. Let the fascinating, hot-bleeding color splendor penetrate you. Let yourself be drifted without thinking and without asking questions to the unknown melodies evoked by some works. Let yourself be absorbed and float in the swirling interstellar spaces suggested by G.S.'s eternally lyrical allusions. " (H. Vandenbossche). Founded the magazine Lens, together with Jos De Frène, and collaborated on the avant-garde magazine Tijd en Mens, led by Jan Walravens. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. Source: Piron.
