Smeers Frans

Frans Smeers was a Belgian artist who was born in 1873 in Etterbeek and who died in 1960 in Brussels. He was a painter, draftsman and etcher. Education at the Academy in Brussels under J. Portaels and J. Stallaert (1884-1890 and 1892-1895). In 1893 co-founder of the Circle Le Sillon, together with J. Lambeaux and A. Bastien, among others. Traveled to Paris in 1895 in the company of A. Bastien, M. Wagemans and M. Blieck. Initially painted mainly realistic portraits and genre scenes. Started to be interested in outdoor painting at the turn of the century. His color palette became brighter and influences of impressionism became noticeable. His preference then began to go out to beach and dune views with characters. Children and women on the beach were placed in generous paint paste, in a nervous brushstroke and a sunny color palette. In many works he opted for a high horizon line, so that all attention was drawn to the scene in the foreground. He also painted and drew marines, portraits and figures. From 1933 to 1945 he taught landscape painting at the Academy in Brussels. Work in the Museums in Brussels, Ixelles and Ghent, among others. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
