Hens Frans

Frans Hens was a Belgian artist who was born in Antwerp in 1856 and who died in 1928. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolorist and graphic artist. In 1872 training at the Academy in Antwerp under J. Jacobs. Traveled to Amerkika in 1873 and then continued his studies at the Academy in Antwerp. Became friends with T. Verstraete. Traveled to Congo in 1886 and 1887. Painted in collaboration with Eug. Broerman brought back the Panorama of Congo for the Exhibition of 1897. From his travels, he brought with him sketches, watercolors, paintings and a collection of plants. Painted landscapes, but mainly gained fame as a marine painter and preferably sought his inspiration in the vicinity of the Scheldt. Initially, the influence of T. Verstraete was noticeable. Previously realized melancholic works, especially views in fog, rain or towards evening. He sensitively reproduced the different nuances in broadly applied, thick paint masses. In 1894 he published an album with ten etchings inspired by the Scheldt. Co-founder of the De XIII Group in 1891, Kunst van Heden in 1905. Was a teacher at the Higher Institute in Antwerp from 1919 to 1923. Work in the Museums in Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent. Mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron).
