Kunstschilder Florent Smet

Smet Florent

Florent Smet was a Belgian artist born in the Netherlands in 1914 in Kampen and who died in 2001 in Aalst. He lived and worked in Lokeren. He was a painter who followed his education at the Hogere Schilderschool in Ghent under the direction of Jozef Trotteyn, but was largely self-taught in painting. He made his debut with still lifes, cityscapes and landscapes (1960s), but fell under the spell of flowers and plants: thistles, medals, anemones, willow catkins, roses and orchids. From the press: "FS is going to recreate with its own style and its own personality. Not the flowers brought together to the traditional fragrances, but the flower on its own, exporessive and full of character. Viewed closely, but never as a phophographic representation "He is not going to copy, his work stems from the gift of internal feeling." Prize of the city of Lokeren in 1964 and 1966, Prize of the Culture Council of Vlassenbroek in 1965. He was a teacher of painting at the Vocational and Industrial School in Lokeren. (PIRON)
