Le Compte Etienne
Etienne Le Compte was a Belgian artist who was born in 1931 in Aalst and who died there in 2010. He was a painter, draftsman, pastelist, gouachist and sculptor. Largely self-taught. Did receive some training at the Academy in Aalst and at the Postma Institute in Amsterdam. Traveled to Asia, South America, West Africa and immersed himself in the individuality and cultural past of the primitive peoples. Painted exotic as well as native landscapes, orchards, vistas. Exuberant color palette. From the press: "E.L.C. loves colors. They appear on his canvases in tangible relief and in a teeming with dozens of shades' and 'All the work of E.L.C. vibrates with his respect for and connection with nature and man in its most primitive form.' Also made his debut around 1985 with sculpting. Worked as a writer under the pseudonym Lode Stevenberg.
