Linnig Egide (Egidius)

Egide Linnig (Sr) was a Belgian artist, born and died in Antwerp (1821-1860). He was a painter and engraver. He was educated at the Academy in Antwerp under the supervision of M. Van Brée and J. Van Gingelen (1834-1842). In 1844 he stayed in The Hague and in 1847 traveled to Norway for a few months. He exhibited regularly in Germany from 1849. He realized landscapes and mainly navies. The romance of shipping, but also the battle of sailors and ships against storms are among his themes. in his works the knowledge of the various types of ships is striking. He was also an experienced etcher. His work can be found in the museums in Antwerp, Kortrijk and Brussels, among other places. He is mentioned in BAS I, II and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (piron)
