Portielje Edward

Edward Portielje was born in Antwerp in 1861 and died there in 1949. He was a Belgian painter. He was the son of painter Jan Portielje and Eulalie Lemaire and the younger brother of painter Gerard Portielje. Education at the Academy in Antwerp, drawing under P. Beaufaux, painting under N. De Keyser and Ch. Abandoned (1877-1881). He received his first painting education from his father Jan Portielje. He attended a full-time academy from 1877 to 1881 in the drawing course with Polydore Beaufaux and the painting course with Charles Verlat and Nicaise De Keyser, following in his brother's footsteps, preferring anecdotal domestic scenes, marines and genre scenes related to (Zeeland) fishing life. Very traditional, fine and precise work. Collaborated with Ed. De Jans and J. Dierckx on murals for the World Exhibition in Antwerp (1894). Work in the Museum in Antwerp (Plagerijtje, 1894). Mentioned in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists.
