Doucet Jacques

Jacques Doucet was a French painter, born in Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1924 and died in Paris in 1994. He had two passions: painting and poetry, and eventually chose painting. He was a graphic artist, pastelist, painter and draftsman. In World War II he was imprisoned as a political prisoner. This experience had an impact on his later work. After his release he went to study in Montparnasse. And exhibited at the Salon des Surindépendants in 1945 and 1946. Jacques Doucet made strange, ironic figurations and combined unusual materials such as tar, torn paper and cardboard. In 1947, at his first exhibition in Budapest, he met Corneille and discovered Hungarian surrealism. Corneille introduced him to “the Reflex - Experimental Group Netherlands”. J.D. drew the cover for the second issue of the magazine published by Reflex. In 1948 he joined the CoBrA group. He exhibited in 1949 in Amsterdam/Netherlands and in 1951 in Liège/Belgium. His style was abstract expressionist, applying his paint thickly. After his CoBrA period, he started painting more and more abstractly. He never completely renounced poetry, which is reflected in his naming of his artwork, especially in the mid-1960s, when the first editions of his poems were published. Or as the artist himself put it "La poésie des mots reste en symbiosis constant avec mon univers plastique." (BT)
