Denonne Alexandre

Alexandre Denonne was a Belgian artist, born in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode in 1879 and deceased in Saint-Gilles in 1953. He was a painter and draughtsman. He was a pupil of his uncle V. Lagye, simultaneously studied at the Academy in Brussels under the guidance of C. Montald (1891–1900), and later became a pupil of H. Luyten in Antwerp, who would strongly influence him. From 1902 to 1930 he lived and worked in Antwerp. He became friends with J. Smits and occasionally stayed in the Kempen. Until around 1930 he mainly painted peasant interiors, rural figures and landscapes; afterwards he also produced city and park views, particularly of Brussels, influenced by plein-air painting. He employed an impressionistic touch with a broad and free handling of paint. Works by him are held in the museums of Antwerp and Tournai. He is listed in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
