De Saegher Romain
Romain De Saegher was a Belgian artist, born in Sint-Amands on the Scheldt in 1907 and passed away there in 1986. He was a painter, draftsman, watercolorist, and pastelist, and entirely self-taught. He created landscapes, Scheldt views, interiors, portraits, figures, still lifes, flowers, and religious subjects. He became especially known for his poignant depictions of the suffering of Christ and other religious themes, which represent a highlight of his oeuvre. His style was expressionist, showing influences of Rouault and Servaes. Around 1970, his rather somber palette became lighter and more vivid. At his death, he donated his house and its contents to the municipality of Sint-Amands, which in 1988 opened the Municipal Museum Romain De Saegher there. His Stations of the Cross can be found in churches in Bruges and Sint-Amands. He is mentioned in BAS I and in Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
