De Noter Jean-Baptist
Jan-Baptist De Noter was a Belgian artist, born in Walem in 1787 and died in Mechelen in 1855. He was a painter, watercolorist and draftsman. He was also the younger brother of Pierre François De Noter, who was also his teacher. He was also a student of P.A. Verhulst and at the Academy in Mechelen. He realized cityscapes and interiors. He found his inspiration mainly in old city buildings and monuments, which he managed to represent architecturally very precisely. Jan-Baptist succeeded his father as city architect in Mechelen. We find his work in the Museum in Leuven. (Piron) However, he never knew many of his painted buildings, yet everything was done with a certain realism. He worked from a pencil sketch that was later elaborated with a broken ink line. The drawing was colored afterwards with large areas of color in a soft color. The skies are almost always light blue or light purple, figures enliven the buildings. Between 1830 and 1850 Canon Schöffer placed an order for 340 watercolors with De Noter. (www.mechelenblogt.be)
