De Cooman Jan

Jan De Cooman was a Belgian artist, born in Zandbergen in 1893 and died in Zandbergen in 1949. He was a painter and etcher. He was educated at the Academy in Brussels under the supervision of C. Montald (1909-1914). He created sensitive, subdued landscapes with trees and snow, but also painted farmer's interiors, portraits, old people and villagers. He found his inspiration in the peaceful landscapes of the Flemish Ardennes around Geraardsbergen. He also painted various Stations of the Cross, including for the churches in Zandbergen, Steenhuize and Sint-Lievens-Esse. He also published some folders of etchings. He engraved works by V. De Saedeleer. Jan De Cooman is listed in CRICK and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
