De Boever Jan Frans

Jan Frans De Boever was a Belgian artist who was born in Ghent in 1872 and who died there in 1949. He was a painter, watercolorist and gouachist. Education at the Academy in Ghent, led by Canneel and L. Tytgadt, whose cousin he married in 1896. Debuted in an academic style, but in 1908 resolutely opted for Symbolism. His favorite theme became the woman. It is remarkable, however, that he never painted 'real' nudes; usually he left them some remnants of clothing, making them a seductress, a challenger or even a devil. The woman was usually depicted as a mistress, witch or whore, sacrifice or goddess, but in all cases the man was her subordinate. In many works a skeleton also appears, which is usually ignored by the woman, trampled or tolerated at her feet. Was in fact a misogynist; his notes show that the woman was and remained la fleur du mal. Was a drawing teacher at the Academy in Ghent from 1900 to 1932. Work in the Museum in Ghent, among others. Mentioned in BAS I, II and Two Centuries signatures of Belgian artists. (PIRON)
