
Danse Auguste
Auguste Danse was a Belgian artist, born in Brussels in 1829 and died in Uccle in 1929. He was a draftsman and graphic artist. He was also the father of Louise and Marie Danse. He was educated at the Academy in Brussels (1943-1955) and was a student of the engraver L. Calamatta. He drew designs for playing cards for companies in Turnhout, stained glass windows for Capronnier and, in the beginning, also engraved medals for Wiener. He is best known as an engraver of portraits, landscapes and faithful reproductions of works by old masters and contemporaries. He founded the department of Fravure at the Academy in Bergen and taught drawing and engraving from 1871 to 1897. Auguste Danse engraved about 500 plates and painted some oil paintings. We can find his work in various print rooms. He is mentioned in the Biographie Nationale of the Royal Academy of Belgium, volume XXXIII. He is also mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)
