Frimout Cyr

Cyr Frimout (Poperinge, 1938) · Painter, draftsman, graphic artist. Brother of astronaut Dirk Frimout. Studied plastic arts at the RNS in Ghent, where he was a student of O. Landuyt (1957–1959). In 1971, laureate of the Berthe Art Prize and a distinction at the Jeune Peinture Belge. Initially leaned towards Surrealism and Hyperrealism, evolving towards a more abstract, distorting style of design. From the press: 'Bearing witness, that is what his work is about. The design detaches itself from the real world precisely to better grasp reality, with a passion bathed in a dreamlike atmosphere. In his work, the creative play, the climate, and the creation of atmosphere are more important than the objects themselves. Cubism and Futurism merge into one another and the drawing is broken: fragmentation, multiplication, demultiplication, broken lines.' There is no longer a question of clear and distinct images, but rather of a play of transpositions. C.F. grafts his images onto a dynamic projection, rendering them unconventional. This fragmentation also affects his characters: profiles detach from faces, noses and eyes are displaced; levels slide over one another' and 'C.F. is a poet. He paints his sensual subjects in always harmonious colors ranging from deep red through bright white and yellow to calm green. The warm radiance emanating from this is characteristic of his plastic language.' In 1979, he was awarded a prize in the international ESA competition with a design for an emblem for the American-European space flight. He was a teacher at the State Higher School for Visual Arts in Anderlecht. His work is held in the Museums in Ostend and Ypres, among others, and in the Print Cabinet in Brussels. Mentioned in the Lexicon of West Flemish Visual Artists VI, in BAS 1, and in Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
