Crunelle José

José Crunelle was a Belgian artist, born in Sint-Joost-ten-Noode in 1924, and died in Ixelles in 2012. He was a tapestry and stained glass designer, painter, draftsman and ceramist. He was educated at the Academy in Sint-Joost-ten-Node under the supervision of J. Maes, and at the Academy in Brussels, under the supervision of L. Devos and A. Carte (1939-1944). For his designs he always started from figuration, which was processed lyrically and poetically. He was co-founder of the Présence Group (1939-1944) and of Domaine de la Lice. In 1959 he became a teacher at the Academy in Brussels. He later became an honorary teacher of visual communication and imaging at the Academies in Brussels and Sint-Joost-ten-Noode. He was a member of the National Council for Visual Arts (UNESCO) and of many foundations and committees dedicated to tapestry art. In 1999 a major exhibition of his work was held at the town hall in Schaerbeek. José Crunelle is mentioned in BAS II and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (Piron)
